On the “Špica” show this Saturday, November 11, Karlo Gagulić, a young Croatian director, shared Playbox Shorts festival that he founded and how, at only 23 years old, he became so successful in film production.
How Karlo started directing films.
“I spent a good part of my life at the ZKM (Zagreb Youth Theatre). In 2018, I joined an association that deals with films. I got the idea and decided to shoot a documentary about my grandmother. It was quite successful, and that’s when I realized that I’m better behind the camera than in front of it. So far, I have shot six films,” said Karlo.
“My debut was ‘Brod u boci’ (‘Ship in a Bottle’), from which I want to launch and shoot a series. I am also preparing for a film festival,” Karlo added.
Impressed by Croatia’s talented actors.
“Ksenija Marinković made a great impression on me, but also our famous actress Ana Begić Tahiri. Goran Grgić surprised me a lot in how open he is to collaboration. I really want to collaborate with Dalibor Matanić, and I’ve learned a lot from Vinko Brešan,” Karlo shared.
Karlo’s film “Što će selo reć” won first prize at the Playbox Shorts film festival.
In addition to filmmaking, Karlo is also the founder of a large festival dedicated to students.
“I am the founder of the Playbox Shorts festival, which is exclusively for students, where we want them to feel special. In the last festival, there were about 400 viewers, and we filled all capacities. Quite by accident, my film ‘Što će selo reć’ won at the festival,” he said.
He also talked about how he perceives his success.
“I don’t have it in my head that I am successful. Once in my life, someone recognized me on the street. The most important thing for me is that some institutions have supported my work, so I consider myself successful. I wish to become more successful every year,” said Karlo.
“I would tell everyone never to give up. If a project is rejected, they must believe that with time, it will still be realized,” Karlo concluded.
